Philosophy
In 1999, brothers Brian and Kevin Joy founded Pyren Vineyards. The Warrenmang Valley was chosen as the location. The perfectly oriented vineyards with grapes such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc are surrounded by forests and other agriculture. In 2003, son, Leighton Joy, achieved his first years as a winemaker and in 2012 he took full charge of the winemaking process. He is a talented young winemaker who has since put Pyren on the international map. As if Joy wasn't enough (What's in a name?) Leighton's nephew, Andy, later joined the team and has been in charge of the overall management ever since. The flagship of the estate is the "Union", a blend of all the best grapes from the best vineyards, where Shiraz, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot meet in an impressive, seductive and harmonious interplay.
Terroir
Poor sandy soils with slate, quartz and clay at 350-400m altitude.
Wines
They always strive for the highest quality and you can taste that:
Pyren Vineyards Pentagon - Black Label - Pyrenees Shiraz: Deep, dark red color with purple reflection. Slightly spicy nose with lots of dark fruits such as blackcurrants, blackberries and black plums. Notes of violets, licorice and Provencal herbs. Nice and full and juicy in the mouth with fine tannins. Its ripe character continues in the pleasant and long final.
Pyren Vineyards Reserva - Very Limited Production Cabernet: Intense, dark red, color with a nice shine. In the nose lots of red berries, cassis and myrtille accompanied by noble notes of fresh wood, vanilla, pepper and a hint of leather. Wonderfully structured mouthfeel. Combination of power and elegance. A cool climate Cabernet that has had plenty of time to mature and a beautiful example of what can be obtained from this grape.
Pyren Vineyards Reserva - Very Limited Production Union: Superb blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Shiny, ruby red color. The nose is delicate and complex. We discover blueberries, laurel, white pepper, heather and graphite. Sumptuous and elegant character, which settles at the same time juicy and velvety in the mouth and culminates in a long refined finish. Cool climate with a warm disposition.
